Solo founder, PHP partisan, and AI maximalist redefines what it means to build in public
LISBON — In a world where startups chase venture capital and unicorns, Pieter Levels has carved a path so singular it borders on the absurd. For over a decade, the Dutch-born entrepreneur has operated entirely alone, launching more than 100 projects, keeping only the ones that worked—Nomad List, RemoteOK, PhotoAI, InteriorAI, and Hoodmaps among them. At its peak last September, his combined monthly revenue across these ventures hit $420,000, all without a single employee, funding round, or meeting.
"The internet rewards consistency more than scale," Levels told *The Levels Chronicle* during a rare interview conducted entirely via email. "A team of one with AI is more productive than a team of ten with meetings." His philosophy is simple: build in public, charge from day one, and let the numbers speak for themselves. PhotoAI, his AI-powered photo generation tool, alone reached $61,000 in monthly recurring revenue by July 2023, a testament to the power of solo ingenuity paired with artificial intelligence.
Levels’ approach is a direct challenge to Silicon Valley’s obsession with growth at all costs. He hosts everything on a single VPS, uses PHP and jQuery, and has never touched Kubernetes. His stack hasn’t changed since 2014. "The boring stack is the productive stack," he insists. Even his AI tools—Cursor and Claude—are wielded with surgical precision, with Levels estimating he lets AI write roughly 70% of his code. The bottleneck, he argues, is no longer engineering but taste and distribution.
His transparency is legendary. Every month, Levels updates his open revenue page (nomadlist.com/open) in real time, inviting both admiration and envy. Critics call it reckless; users call it inspiring. "Show MRR publicly and you’ll get haters," he admits. "But the visibility of haters is also the visibility of users—they’re the same dial."
